Earth Fair Market, Tokai: A Foodie Delight
You would be somewhat mistaken to you call yourself a Capetonian if you haven't been to the awesome Earth Fair Market (even if you've been up to Signal Hill for sundowners). There are in fact two Earth Fair Markets, one by St. Georges Mall and one in Tokai. We visited the market in the southern suburbs, Tokai, last Saturday morning. The market is bustling with grocery shoppers, families and friends twice a week (there is also a mid-week market on a Wednesday evening).
On our visit, we focused mainly on investigating the available food on offer, as the market itself does. We did fall perilously in love with beautiful jewels (there are often non-edible products at the market for variety), but we were pulled in all directions by the perfectly fresh greens, smells of Portuguese food being prepared and bowls offering cured meats to sample. This spot really is a foodie's paradise. So much so, that it makes me want to bid Pick 'n Pay and Checkers a final farewell. They are no match at all, on any level, to shopping at the market.
"you actually know where your super-fresh food is coming from.."
The freshest breads are lovingly prepared to a crispy brown that's just right, tarts have fresh berries on them and jams have been carefully home-made (when last did you try quince jam?). Other than being a superior shopping experience where you actually know where your super-fresh food is coming from, another appeal of the market is the international food angle. Grab a German sausage from the grill or pretend you're on holiday in Portugal as you bite down into a pastei de nata.
We'll admit that we didn't include any photos of the drinks available at the market. Let that serve an an extra temptation: get down to the market tomorrow and sit down with something deliciously cold and honey-coloured.

If you're a vendor and you see a photo of your goods that aren't labelled with your name or brand, please let us know so that we can add that for you!
See other great things to do on a weekend, here.
