Oranjezicht City Farm Market: Now at Granger Bay
The city farm in Oranjezicht, Cape Town, has a fresh, bustling market every Saturday morning. Market Day moved to it's new location in Granger Bay last weekend, which is basically in the Waterfront. If you're driving through the V&A Waterfront, you'll find the market's parking right in front of you at the third round-about (start counting them after the aquarium). Parking is secure behind a boom and costs R10.
For those of you who have never been to the market, this one specialises in fresh food and has lots of awesome breakfast options to choose from, from Lebanese to German fare (and many more glorious options that are overwhelming to list). If that's not quite enough for you, perhaps an effect of the sea air, fill the gap with a red velvet brownie or a potjie pie. There are gluten-free and sugar-free options available too (that look darn good). Wash that down with some fresh orange juice or a warm cup of coffee as you sit on a hay bale enjoying the view of the sea.
The family-friendly market doesn't serve any alcohol and is also dog-friendly. That said, it's always a good idea to have your dog on a leash.
Apart from your dog, another thing you can bring with you is a massive basket to fill with enormous eggs, mouldy cheeses, strawberry orange jam, pomegranate juice, cactus nibbles and a very large array of gleaming seasonal fruit and vegetables. You're bound to find some wonderfully foreign or unfamiliar fruit or vegetable that you won't know how to eat.
The farmers and vendors are very knowledgeable and ready for a chat, willing to answer a long list of questions about their products, and the origins thereof. You'll leave armed with new knowledge (of how to cook that strange vegetable), filled with good food and happy to have been in the fresh sea air. Markets like this strengthen our connection with our food and inspire us to be more in touch with the processes that we often take for granted.
